Started from a question posed by ArtEZ’s Design Art Technology department: how do we document the process and methodologies of building a large-scale artwork? This triggered an exploration into AI image generators (DALL-E) and a broader discussion about AI’s influence on jobs and ownership in the cultural sector.
Instead of resisting the technology, it was integrated into the artistic process. The project began with a visual prompt — the title is that prompt verbatim — representing a large-scale media installation. The AI output: a dark space containing a large structure holding a colossal semi-transparent, glowing blue sphere. This image was then reverse-engineered into a physical reality: 120 metres of transparent PVC tubing held by custom 3D-printed connectors, filled with phosphorous wire (EL-Wire) emitting soft blue light. An emulation of Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome aesthetic. Six months of work.
Materials: 120m transparent PVC tubing, 120m EL-Wire (phosphorous), custom 3D-printed connectors, wooden frame structure.
